Filming in the Maldives

THE MADLIVES                           ދިވެހިރާއްޖެ

Nestled in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is an archipelago of nearly 1200 pristine islands, scattered across 26 atolls and spanning a vast expanse of approximately 90,000 square kilometers. Despite being a nation that is 99% water, it supports a population of around half a million Maldivian locals, residing on about 200 inhabited islands. The country’s tryst with tourism dates back to the early ’70s, transforming the Maldives into an iconic global getaway with over 100 resorts and more than 600 tourism facilities.

Attaining independence in 1965, the Maldives has become synonymous with tropical luxury, drawing travelers from all corners of the world. Each of its small islands, averaging 1-2 square kilometers, holds a unique charm within the diverse array of atolls. The Maldives, with its rich history, has been inhabited since the 5th century BC, with the populace initially embracing Buddhism and later converting to Islam in 1153.

The Maldives, beyond its breathtaking landscapes, boasts a vibrant cultural heritage with its own distinctive language known as ‘Dhivehi’ (ދިވެހި), discovered in scripts dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Its history is a tapestry woven with threads of trade, colonization, religious evolution, and the unique features of island communities, making it a captivating destination for those seeking a harmonious blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.

FORMALITIES

FILMING PERMIT

In compliance with Film Permit Regulations, all foreign film crews are required to apply for a filming permit during their shoot in the Maldives. To facilitate the process, a local agent must accompany the film unit. This free-of-charge permit necessitates documentation such as ticket copies, passport copies, and an equipment list, essential for a seamless application process.

VISA

For all non-tourist travelers, a sponsor or business VISA is required or highly advised. Once arrived as a tourist, the visitor is not permitted to engage in any form of business, occupation, profession, or paid employment while in the Maldives (source: Maldives Immigration). Therefore, we always apply for business VISA’s for incoming crew, a process that includes obtaining national health insurance for a minimum charge per person.

LOGISTICS

Covering a vast expanse of 820 KM from north to south, the Maldives, predominantly composed of water, may require varied travel times. Proximity to the capital, Male’, often involves ferry or speedboat transport. Domestic flights are available for travel to the northern or southern regions, while resorts predominantly use the world’s largest seaplane network. Explore travel options, including private planes, liveaboard, or yacht, and we’re here to assist with your preferences.

EQUIPMENT & CUSTOMS

The Industry is small in The Maldives, and therefor the available quality equipment is limited. We can therefor assist in bringing available equipment from neighboring country Sri Lanka, or we will advise our clients to bring their own equipment. We will assist with the custom clearance upon arrival – The Maldives is not a carnet country but the procedure is the same. We will require a detailed equipment-list and along with our agent we will deal with the simple custom clearance process.

DRONE

Enhance color contrasts by flying a drone in the Maldives! To do so, we’ll secure a drone permit from the Maldivian army and communication authority, considering factors like seaplane routes and airport proximity. Adhering to height restrictions and avoiding military zones, airports, and customs processes for your drone are essential. Professional drone flyers in the Maldives are ready to assist with your imagery needs.
